How Consuming too much Sugar can Effect your Body

By now we all know that too much sugar is bad for us and in today’s society more and more sugar is being hidden in our foods that we buy. We can get natural sources of sugar from fruit, vegetables and milk but the amount of added sugar in our diet is quite alarming.

According to the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) Australians consume an average of 60 grams (14 tablespoons) of added sugar per day. This is well beyond what is recommended by the World Health Organisation as only 25 grams (6 tablespoons) of added sugar per day and less for children. In the same study by the ABS it was found that teenage males aged 14-18 were consuming an average of 92 grams of added sugar per day! How crazy!

Below are just some effects of too much added sugar in your diet

  • Too much sugar can create insulin resistance which can cause people to crave more food – especially sugars which can contribute to diabetes.
  • Excess sugar intake is strongly associated with weight gain – even to people to exercise regularly
  • Studies have connected excess sugar consumption with brain performance and its effect on memory
  • It can cause cavities- the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and can destroy tooth enamel

Next time you’re looking at a food label check out the sugar on the nutritional panel as well as the ingredients listing to find out exactly how much added sugar you are consuming. You can still have a well balanced diet with a few treats every now and again but within moderation.
